About Shimon Cohen, LCSW

I’ve been where you are

I know what it’s like to get sober and still feel like something isn’t resolved.

That’s what brought me to this work.

And it’s why I do it the way I do.

I’m available for appointments online throughout Florida & Maine.

Why work with me?

With me, you're getting someone who has 22 years in recovery and over 15 years doing this work.

I work with men in recovery because I know how frustrating it can be to do all this work to be sober, but still have issues. It can feel like they should be resolved by now, but they’re not. And I also know how amazing life can be when you get there.

Therapy can actually address those things. We can heal from past experiences.

We can learn new ways of relating to ourselves and others.

And we can get to a place where you’re really being the person you’re hoping to be, at home, at work, with family, with friends, as a father, as a son, as a brother, as a husband, as a partner.

Peace, serenity, and confidence are possible.

That’s why I do this work.

Clients tell me I’m relatable and down to earth, often saying, “This is different from what I thought therapy would be. I can actually talk to you.”

I spent years in community mental health and schools, later as clinical faculty at a university. I still teach as an adjunct, which keeps me curious and grounded. I also train social workers and other helping professionals.

I care about who you are. I work with men from all backgrounds. The work we do will honor who you are and your experiences.

I look forward to talking with you,

Shimon Cohen, LCSW

What it’s like to work with me

In our first session we’ll talk about what’s going on and why you’re coming to therapy now.

We’ll look at what’s already working in your life and your recovery, and build on that.

We’ll set clear goals and figure out exactly how to address what’s getting in the way.

From there, we go at your pace.

Sometimes we’ll laugh and joke. Other times we’ll be more serious.

Sometimes you will feel like I’m validating and supporting you. Other times you will feel like I’m challenging you, but I’ll do it in a supportive way, always in a way that is in support of your goals.

Depending on what we’re working on, we may use EMDR or ACT or both. These approaches are different from regular talk therapy. I’ll explain everything to you from the start and give you options every step of the way.

We will often practice techniques that you can apply in your life, not just talk.

The goal is real change you can feel in all aspects of your life.

I help men in recovery who got sober but still feel something unresolved finally process what’s underneath so recovery feels complete.
